Augmentative Communication
The augmentative communication program at Easter Seals Crossroads helps enable people, who are unable to speak or write well enough for others to understand them, to functionally communicate.
Program Services
The Augmentative Communication Team consists of speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and a social worker who specialize in technology applications for the benefit of persons of all ages, who are unable to speak or write so that others may understand them.
Evaluation
A pre-admission packet completed by the individual, staff or family prior to the initial visit is used to develop an evaluation targeted specifically to the individual's needs. Components may include:
- Seating/positioning for communication
- Current/future communication needs
- Language comprehension
- Device access
- Trial with low and high tech communication systems
Recommendations
A completed comprehensive report summarizes specific recommendations such as:
- Rental/purchase of devices
- Specific readiness skills and strategies for developing these skills
- Possible funding sources
- Development of a medical funding proposal as appropriate
- Case management and periodic ongoing support services
- Any necessary wheelchair modifications for best access to communication systems
Training
Training opportunities are available for consumers, families, caregivers and professionals. They may include:
- Initial system set-up
- Vocabulary selection/graphic representation
- Programming/troubleshooting for communication devices
- Creating communication situations
- Ongoing communication therapy
Consultation
The following services also are available:
- Resource information regarding augmentative communication
- Training for other agencies/schools
- Other assistive technology
- Consultation with members of Easter Seals Crossroads assistive technology department, therapists and other professionals
